Site Promotion – The Final Touches and Hints

If you are reading this you should by now have been accepted into the largest directories and through dint of this be having pages of your site come up in answer to searches done performed with the major search engines. This is the ‘stick a fork in it; it’s done’ level of website creation. Congratulations, you have by now set up a successful website that is attracting increasing numbers of visitors, repeat visitors and hopefully sales – if your site is a commercial one. Just because this part of the job is done does not mean that you can sit back and wait for the money to roll in on a never-to-be-altered site again. Similarly, there is plenty of extra work that you can do to attract higher visitor numbers.

The following hints are about website promotion methods that are partially effective depending upon the nature of your site. Some of them work better than others, but if used correctly, all of them can produce results that will return results and be worth the outlay of time and effort.

If your website is to be used primarily for selling a product or a service, try banner ads. Although their flashing animation and garish colours have given them a bad name, their uselessness has been exaggerated. It is true that the number of times that a banner add has to be viewed before it is clicked is approaching the 1000 mark, but this is down primarily to very bad advertising.

Most advertisers think that complexity and coolness are integral ingredients to a banner ad. They are most probably wrong. A banner ad is just a simple way of getting someone to visit your website – so – keep it simple. Also, a banner ad requires interaction – so – put a “click here” button on it. The vast majority of web users are not experts and won’t realise that there is a link embedded in the banner, so used are they to non-interactive media. Do not hold out high hopes -but similarly do not dismiss out of hand.

Reciprocal links are a good way of encouraging visitors and forging links. It is a very simple concept – I put a link on my site and you put a link on yours. Obviously after just a few clicks a dedicated surfer can be leaping across categories and subjects and reach your site having had no intention of visiting you in the first place. Reciprocal links also have the benefit of increasing your ranking by the search engine.

Possibly the cheapest and easiest way to advertise is the email signature. If you do email a lot why not put your website link on the bottom of you signoff? All you need is that one email to be forwarded to the one person who visits your site and it has paid for the 30 seconds it has taken to set up. Anything else is a bonus.

If you have a niche website it may be worth registering with a topsite. These will help you attract visitors who are gravitating towards your website topic area but have the drawback of requiring (usually) a picture reciprocal link. Sometimes this can be intrusive and overly dominate your website.

Also, don’t overlook traditional methods of advertising. There is the terrible assumption that because the World Wide Web is only 15 years old that everything to do with it must be modern and new, too. But all the internet does is do what humanity has being doing for thousands of years – advertising, passing information and, of course buying and selling. Newsletters, newspapers, flyers and word of mouth can give a boost that electronic promotion cannot hope to.

In summary, there are more ways of advertising and promoting a website than ever before. This give the website owner a tremendous choice but makes it complicated to choose the right one. Some services, such as Free For All pages will allow you to post a link on them may seem like a good idea. The trouble is that you will find your website often associated with the seedier aspects of the web and, if there is access to email information, swamped with spam.

In short, check with reputable sites and providers and sources you can trust, but also don’t be afraid to be conventional and unconventional. Every day somebody comes up with an original idea; it could be you. Similarly doing the basics right is only ever good.

Is Persistence All it Takes to Be Successful in a Home Based Business?

In today’s Home Based Business environment we hear all too often that “the key to success is persistence.” We hear, “Just keep at it”, “do it, do it, just do it.” Over and over again the mantra is to be persistent. There are a million plus stories of people who have failed in their home based business because even though they were indeed persistent, they were primarily persistent at doing the wrong things and not nearly as persistent at doing the right things. There are many things one must do correctly to have a successful home based business or any business for that matter. In this article we will discuss three of those things; Marketing, Training and Retaining. The first thing the successful home based business owner must be involved in and become an expert at is marketing. We must not only market our business and our products but we must become masters at marketing ourselves. We are usually conscious of the need to market our business and product but we often fall woefully short at marketing ourselves. The home based business owner should constantly work towards establishing themselves as an expert in their chosen field. People always want to work with an expert. In the minds of our customer/client we should strive to establish ourselves as experts. One important note is that a person’s view of us is subjective. Meaning that, to them, we are what they think of us. If they view us as an expert, then that is who we become to them. So our marketing must go beyond product and extend to our person.Second the home based business owner must always be training. No matter what level of success we reach we should continually strive to be better. Just because everyone thinks and says I have the greatest widget is not reason enough for me to not try to build a better widget. Imagine if those who trail-blazed the path while building what we now know as the internet were content with their original product. Imagine if Henry Ford was content with the Model T. Think where Sara Lee would be if she only wanted to bake an apple pie. We must always be learning and expanding our knowledge. Not just for ourselves but also for those who work for us and with us.And lastly, for this discussion is the area of retention. This step can add just as much value to a business as the others but is perhaps the most misunderstood and hardest to achieve. In today’s society of “give it to me now” we focus far too much attention on pleasing our customer today and not nearly enough attention making sure that our customer returns. Not only should the home based business owner work hard to please today’s customer but just as hard to make sure they return. What is required to retain the customer/client will vary. The focus should be to get them to return. So in answer to the question, “is persistence all it takes to achieve success.” The answer is a resounding NO. Persistence is a necessary ingredient but we must be persistent in doing the right things the right way. Marketing, training and retaining will help push us towards our desired goal.To learn more strategies to help keep your home based business out of hot water, see my link below.
